Life
After completing his Master’s in IIT Kanpur, he moved
to London where he worked in a company called SESA for 3 years. While working,
he excelled in designing software for air freight management. At that time he
decided to return to India to start his own company.
In 1976 he joined IIM Ahmedabad as chief system
programmer where he designed and developed BASIC interpreter for Electronics
Corporation of India Limited (ECIL). At that time he started his first
entrepreneurial venture called Softronics,
a software consulting firm in Pune but the company failed.
Later he joined Patni Computer System. The startup
failure did not affect him, he thought it as learning experience. During his work,
he met his soulmate Sudha Murthy and
fell in love with her. They both got married in Narayana’s Bangalore house with just
a cost ₹700
While working in Patni, he gain felt the urge to get
back into entrepreneurship. He strongly felt that he was meant for it and this
was the right time too. But to start the company he didn’t have the money. His
wife Sudha Murthy at first was not interested in this idea of leaving a monthly
salary job to start a own company. Though Narayana’s will to start a company didn’t
change. Where did it bring him again to Sudha for money…
Now Sudha’s mind changed and thought of helping him.
She decided to give him ₹10,000 that she
saved for all these days and she said that she will handle the financial needs
for the house for 3 years and don’t need to worry about it. Yeah she is a strong women.
Sudha Murthy is a strong and confident women who was
pillar to Narayana Murthy’s success. In late 70’s there was an advertisement
for work from Tata Telco company which
said “Women need not to apply for the specified job”. After reading that
advertisement she felt heartbreaking for judging the women’s capability. So she
wrote a letter to the chairman of Tata Group JRD TATA.
After reading the letter JRD Tata was so surprised by
Sudha’s courage and open mindset. Later he gave work to Sudha in same Tata
Telco company.
So what happened? Let's see in next part...
