THE THEORY OF STEPHEN HAWKING

When I started to know about his story there were so many interesting things in his life. How come he has achieved so many things after he was affected by the disease?

Stephen Hawking was born in 8 January 1942 in Oxford. It was exactly after 300 years of Galileo Galilei who was known as the father of observational astronomy and father of modern physics.

In 1950, Stephen did his schooling in St Albans high school for girls ( boys could attend untill age 10). At the age of 11 he went to St Albans school. In school he was a good student, not an exceptional one. In 1959, he won a scholarship to University of Oxford where his father studied.

He wanted to study mathematics but the course was not offered in the university. So he opted for physics under Robert Berman. There he pursued his interest thermodynamics, relativity, quantum mechanics. Afterwards he got bored in his university life, he graduated in 1962 with first class.

After graduating from the university, he spent some time studying sunspots in Oxford University observatory. This is the time where he found his interest in black hole and relativity. In perfect words he liked theory more than observation. So he left Oxford and joined Trinity College which is in Cambridge where he studied under Fred Hoyle a famous English astronomer.

When he came to college he was at the age of 21, at that time he started to develop Lou Gehrig's disease which is nothing but ALS is a type of motor neurone disease. Doctors gave him 2-3 years of time to live, he would gradually lose his arms, legs and voice till he completely get paralyzed. At that time he said to the doctor that my mind won't get paralyzed.

In 1965, he attended a lecture by English mathematician Roger Penrose, who produced a ground breaking paper on space-time singularities. Hawking became re-energised and wanted to study theoretical astronomy and cosmology, particularly in black holes and singularities. He later collaborated with Penrose for many important papers on these topics.

During the same year he also got married with a language student Jane Wilde with her help he completed his PhD and became research fellow. Now he also lost his voice so at Cambridge, fellow scientist developed a synthetic speech device which enabled him to speak by movement of his cheek muscles. Despite the technology it was a time consuming process.
He has also said about his disability...

“It is a waste of time to be angry about my disability. One has to get on with life and I haven’t done badly. People won’t have time for you if you are always angry or complaining. ”

In 1968, he joined the staff of institute of astronomy where he remained untill 1973. In late 60's he and Roger Penrose applied complex mathematical model which they created from Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity which led Hawking to prove first of hisany singularities theorem. This theorem provides condition for singularity in space-time and also implied that space-time would have had a beginning big band and would end in a black hole. From the analysis of gamma ray emissions, he suggested there would have been mini black holes after big bang.

In 1974, Hawking and Jacob Bekenstein showed that black holes are not actually completly black but they should thermally create and emit sub-atomic particles known today as Hawking Radiation.

“The message of this lecture is that black holes ain’t as black as they are painted. They are not the eternal prisons they were once thought.
Things can get out of a black hole both on the outside and possibly to another universe. So if you feel you are in a black hole, don’t give up – there’s a way out.”

Despite of being one of the best physicist in his generation, he has also been able to translate different physics model into general understanding for general public.

In 1995, he and his Jane Wilde got divorced and has three children. He has also wrote many books. A Brief History Of Time which was best seller which had answered many question of the universe. He also appeared in TV program. There was also a movie about him " Theory Of Everything". During this time he was Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge and retired in 2009.

Then Stephen Hawking died at the age of 76 on 14 March 2018. Now if you take the death date of Hawking it is the birth date of Albert Einstein. Till now I haven't said his full name now I am going to STEPHEN WILLIAM HAWKING CH CBE FRS FRSA this name would be in the history. When he died he was $20 million. He also hasn't received a Nobel prize in his life.
His idea were simple...

My goal is simple. It is a complete understanding of the universe, why it is as it is and why it exists at all.”

He also predicted so many things for future....they are

1The genie is out of the bottle. We need to move forward on artificial intelligence development but we also need to be mindful of its very real dangers.
2Our earth is becoming too small for us, global population is increasing at an alarming rate and we are in danger of self-destructing… I would not be optimistic about the long-term outlook for our species.
3. Climate change is one of the great dangers we face, and it’s one we can prevent if we act now.
4. If humanity is to continue for another million years, our future lies in boldly going where no one else has gone before.

What we can learn from this story?
1. Nothing is impossible. If you wish to do it.
